I spent the first part this weekend at a LAN Center in my home town of scenic Fontana, California.  The folks at Netfragz (the LAN Center), were kind enough to host Jeremy’s first meet and greet for his TF2 team/community [TF2F].  Frags, food, energy drinks, and cocktails were had by most.  It being new content week for both the Sniper and Spy classes things promised be extra fun.  Unfortunately, Valve switched the new weapon acquisition to be not so accommodating to our weekend LAN event.  While I appreciate the free updates to a game I bought well over a year ago, I would have preferred them stick with the achievement system for new weapons.

As it stands now (although they claim there’s a bug with how long it takes to acquire weapons) in the 12 hours or so of game time I clocked on Friday and Saturday I unlocked 2 items. I received the alternate medic healing gun, which I’ve had since the medic update and the second bat, for the scout, which I didn’t have yet.  While that doesn’t sound that awful, I wasn’t playing either of these classes when I received these items.  There’s not really at least for the moment a rhyme or reason to it, you can even get multiples of items you already have.  Jeremy, who is pictured in today’s comic with the Huntsman and the Jarate(jar of piss) has neither of them and he played at the LAN Friday Saturday and Sunday, with this as his primary class.  Not that this stopped him from pouring a jar of piss on me, we were at the LAN for like 12 hours.

I appreciate what Valve is doing whole heartedly. They’re one of my favorite developers out there, however this weekend was like coming down to Christmas Morning and finding out the format was White Elephant.  Then you get told you can’t swap gifts.  And all you got was 4 Critzcriegs and 2 Blutsaughers and a drawing from Santa of him touching you places you’d be ashamed to tell your parents about–but you should because keeping Santa’s secrets only hurts you boys and girls.  Also you only have 6 hours logged as medic.
